Treat—Protocol Guidelines

ProtoHIT provides ACOEM-compliant protocols to guide providers’ treatment of injured workers. These early intervention protocols provide MMI targets right after diagnosis and show preferred treatments based on the protocol and patient’s week of recovery.

ProtoHIT provides treatment protocols for workers comp clinics

Think of a ProtoHIT protocol as a rumble strip in a highway. The system alerts healthcare providers if cases are drifting from a standard treatment, so they can adjust the course as they see fit, based on their experience, the patient history and job-specific conditions.

Compliance-based protocols, such as order sets, don’t work. There are just too many variables in treating an individual case. ProtoHIT’s protocols are “surveillance tools” to help guide and focus the provider as needed. In addition, the protocols also identify those cases that require deeper evaluation. For example, Dr. Wagner, our CMO, once identified a life-threatening condition when a patient fell outside the standard protocol conditions for a back injury—enabling the worker to get the right treatment more quickly.

ProtoHIT’s 21 protocols were developed and used in treating over 12,000 cases and 50,000 patient encounters over a period of four years. They have been used as the state workers’ comp guidelines in the California for many years. In addition, ProtoHIT works with ACOEM to ensure that all protocols remain current with the latest evidence-based guidelines.

Communicate—Online Reports

ProtoHIT allows you to print or save Return to Work (RTW) forms, treatment forms and reports. These can then be sent or emailed to employers, case managers and others as necessary. You can also choose to allow online access for your employers to selected information, such as a summarized list of open claims, so they can quickly get employee status without having to pick up the phone and call. And once a diagnosis has been made, they’ll have a return to work and MMI target dates for each injured employee.

Measure—Treatment Scoring

ProtoHIT helps health clinics implement evidence based medicine for workers comp casesProtoHIT monitors all claim treatments, number of visits, lost and restricted work days and other key information to give a treatment score to every case. This information enables clinics to evaluate the efficacy of their treatment plans and benchmark treatment outcomes over time for continuous improvement.

In addition, the application provides a number of reports for clinics and employers. One report, for example, provides injury rates by ICD-9 codes to show frequency of injuries. Employers can drill down this information by plant or type of production, helping them to pinpoint those areas where re-engineering, job re-assignment, or additional safety training is needed.

Mobile Healthcare IT

ProtoHIT is designed for smaller screens (with point and click selection features), so you can use it at your desk PC or with your tablet computer (such as the Apple iPad). You can choose what works best for your clinic.

Cloud Computing

Because it’s a “cloud” or web-based application (also called software-as-a-service or SaaS), you don’t need to buy any additional equipment or software to use ProtoHIT.  All you need is Internet access and a browser.

Unlike some medical software, there’s no complex and expensive installation or user training involved. You can be using our system within hours. Updates are automatic.
