ProtoHIT™ SaaS Compliant With ACOEM Third Edition Occupational Practice Guidelines

Updated treatment protocols, developed in conjunction with The Rocky Mountain Center for Occupational & Environmental Health, improve patient outcomes in workers’ compensation clinics.

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M., March 21, 2011 ‒ ProtoHIT, Inc., working in conjunction with The Rocky Mountain Center for Occupational & Environmental Health (RMCOEH), released updated patient treatment protocols to help occupational health providers optimize treatment of injured workers, communicate effectively with employers, and measure efficacy of implemented treatment plans.

“ProtoHIT’s patient protocols are the only Third Edition optimized protocols available on the market,” said Dr. Christopher J. Wolfkiel, Director ACOEM Practice Guidelines.

“These protocols function as a surveillance tool to focus the professional on what needs deeper evaluation,” said Dr. Barry Chaiken, Chair, ProtoHIT advisory board. “It is not to pass judgment. It is to guide and focus treatment. There will always be variation, and our job is to examine the variation and be sure it is at a level we deem acceptable. Without variation there is no progress or new discoveries. With too much variation there is poor quality and poor outcomes.”

ProtoHIT is the only occupational health software that measures patient outcomes to help workers’ compensation health providers improve patient treatments. Dr. Phillip Wagner, ProtoHIT’s Chief Medical Officer, originally developed and perfected the system using 12,000 cases at his occupational health clinic. In addition to achieving better quality and outcomes with ProtoHIT, medical costs decreased by 15% in the treatment of patients.

ACOEM’s Third Edition of Occupational Medicine Practice Guidelines is the most comprehensive collection of musculoskeletal medical recommendations in the industry. They are based on years of research by ACOEM, the Rocky Mountain Center for Occupational and Environmental Health and hundreds of multidisciplinary panel members and reviewers, delivering evidence-based methodology to assist occupational health providers in making medical treatment decisions. The guidelines contain more than 12,650 references and 2,500 recommendations with supporting evidence levels, tables, and references.

ProtoHIT to Show SaaS Software at American Occupational Health Conference in Washington DC

Software Helps Occupational Health Providers Improve Patient Outcomes

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M., March 21, 2011 ‒ ProtoHIT, Inc. announced today that it will be showing its web-based software at the American Occupational Health Conference (AOHC) to physician attendees, who primary specialize in occupational and environmental medicine (OEM). ProtoHIT will be in booth 417 in the exhibit hall at the conference, which is being held at the Grand Hyatt in Washington DC from March 26-29.

ProtoHIT is designed for occupational health clinics focused on workers’ compensation. It provides treatment guidelines for 85% of the most common job related injuries, simplifying providers’ work and enabling them to focus on those cases that require greater attention. It enhances the clinics’ communication with their employers, and measures treatment outcomes to give providers feedback for continuous improvement. It helps clinics get injured patients to maximum medical improvement (MMI) faster, cut the number of patient visits and reduce healthcare costs up to 15% while not compromising patient outcomes.

“We are delighted to be at the AOHC conference,” said Bruce Fryer, president and CEO of ProtoHIT. “We look forward to speaking with OEM physicians about the work we have done with ACOEM to enhance our treatment guidelines as well as discuss the success our customers are having using the software.”

The ProtoHIT software includes treatment guidelines which are now compliant with ACOEM’s third edition occupational medical practice guidelines.

Attending the show with Mr. Fryer will be Barry Chaiken, MD, MPH, FHIMSS and board advisor to ProtoHIT. Mr. Chaiken has been a past chairman of HIMSS and fully understands the use of healthcare IT technology to achieve two of the most important objectives in healthcare today: improve patient outcomes and reduce healthcare costs.

ProtoHIT is delivered as software-as-a-service (SaaS) minimizing the need for clinics to install or manage complex server configurations. ProtoHIT can set up new customers in a few hours. The software is also unique in its security management. Instead of a large database with separate access controls like many other SaaS solutions, ProtoHIT provides an “isolation architecture” which provides each client with a distinct and separate database. Coupled with unique private encryption keys helps guarantee each health clinic’s system is totally secure.

About AOHC

The American Occupational Health Conference (AOHC) is designed for physicians who specialize in or have an interest in occupational and environmental medicine (OEM) as well as non-physicians who are involved in the field. AOHC offers a variety of educational activities for participants new to OEM as well as for the experienced professional. The conference is sponsored by the American College of Occupational and Environmental Medicine (ACOEM). The 2011 American Occupational Health Conference is ACOEM’s 96th Annual Meeting. Former Board Chair of HIMSS to Help Guide Company’s Direction in Delivering Patient Treatment Optimization Software for Workers’ Comp

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M., April 5, 2010 ‒ ProtoHIT, Inc. announced today that Dr. Barry Chaiken, former chair of the HIMSS board of directors, has joined ProtoHIT’s advisory board. Dr. Chaiken is a firm believer that healthcare IT has the potential to transform the healthcare economy to improve patient outcomes and reduce costs, including workers’ compensation.

Dr. Chaiken has over 20 years’ experience in healthcare information technology, patient safety, clinical transformation, and public health. During his career, he has worked with the National Institutes of Health, U.K.’s National Health Service, McKesson, and BearingPoint. Over the past 15 years Dr. Chaiken provided expertise in quality and patient safety to provider and payor organizations helping them utilize information technology to improve clinical and administrative activities. He has served as guest lecturer and consultant on topics including patient safety, clinician adoption of information technology, quality improvement and managed care. Dr. Chaiken served as a HIMSS board member from 2006 to 2010 and as its board chair from 2009 to 2010.

Dr. Chaiken became involved with ProtoHIT when learning the company was designing software to help workers’ compensation clinics optimize treatment of injured workers. The ProtoHIT software will enable occupational health clinics improve patient outcomes by implementing an evidence-based clinical practice.

“I like the focus of ProtoHIT, helping providers improve patient outcomes,” Dr. Chaiken said. “This is exactly where the health industry is going. Delivering a solution that helps providers implement evidence-based medicine will be a great boon to the industry.”

ProtoHIT is commercializing the work of Dr. Phillip Wagner, an occupational health physician at the New Mexico Veterans Hospital and associate professor at the University of New Mexico’s Department of Occupational Medicine. After 12,000 cases and 50,000 patient encounters at his occupational health clinic in northern California over a five year period, Dr. Wagner was able to determine a set of best practices for treating 80-85% of the most common job related injuries. He found that by setting clear protocols for injuries like carpal tunnel syndrome, patients were guided into established therapies that improved outcomes and reduced costs. And, by sharing information through a centralized data base, they saw administrative overhead cut for all parties.
